Researchers began to deal with the problem of unused land almost immediately after the introduction of reforms in the Russian economy, including in agriculture. It should be noted that in different periods there was a different approach to the directions of research on the problem of unused, that is, lands withdrawn from agricultural use. If at the end of the 90s, studies were carried out towards the correct valuation of land, in terms of effective sale. The evaluation criteria were considered from both sides, the owner and the buyer. From 2000 to 2010, researchers considered this problem from the point of view of preparing a regulatory framework for newly created new forms of business and its compliance with Russian legislation. The second, and no less important, direction of research during this period was the discussion about the need to introduce abandoned lands into agricultural circulation. In the period from 2010 to the present, research is being carried out towards a more efficient introduction of unused agricultural land into irculation, i.e. with the lowest cost and effective further use. On this issue, in 2020, the Department of Informatization of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, agricultural universities proposed a topic for research "Methods for assessing the effectiveness of involving unused agricultural land in agricultural circulation." On this topic, the authors have prepared and published a number of studies aimed at determining the value and impact of unused land on the agricultural economy, to determine the economic effect of entering unused agricultural land. Within the framework of this study, the analysis of the dynamics of changes in the areas of arable land, areas under grain, fodder crops in the context of agricultural organizations and peasant (farmer) households, households was carried out. A classification of unused lands is proposed, technologies for introduction into agricultural circulation are proposed, calculations for the formation of a fleet of machines from tractors and agricultural machines of various power and working width are made.
